What is a Colon and Why Should I Care For It?

The colon is a hollow tube-like organ. It extends from the cecum, where the small intestine empties the undigested food and bodily metabolic waste. It is approximately five feet and ends at the rectum.

The wall of the colon has several layers of muscular tissue which contract (paristalisis) and propel the contents of the digestive tract slowly along.

The inner lining is equipped with sensitive nerves and glands which aid in the final stages of digestion and water absorption and assimilation of food (vitamins and minerals).

The colon's main function is to eliminate body wastes from the system. When the colon is clean and normal we experience health and well-being. When the colon is sluggish or encrusted, body wastes accumulate and constipation results. Thus the health balance declines.

Cleansing

Colon health is an important part of a healthy lifestyle. Colon cleansing is not new, it has been around for since 1500 BC. Colon cleansing is recommended and should be your first step in any weight loss program.

Colon cleansing alone isn't enough to do the job properly. Colon cleansing is critical to the proper uptake of certain nutrients and proper digestion and showned to help lessen the occurance of colon cancer.

Colon cleansing herbs not only cleanse and scrub, but also draw out old fecal matters and toxins, stop bleeding, disinfect, kill and expell parasites, destroy and remove cancer cells. Colon cleansing is a procedure which may include the use of many different supplements, and few days of fasting.

Colon cancer

Colon cancer is the term commonly used to describe colo-rectal [or bowel] cancer. Colorectal cancer is cancer of the large intestine [colon], the lower part of your digestive system. Colon cancer may be associated with a high-fat, low fiber diet and red meat. Colorectal cancer is the second most common type of cancer and accounts for 20 percent of all cancer deaths.

Colon cancer can almost always be caught in its earliest and most curable stages by colonoscopy. Colon cancer is one of the most common types of cancer and a major cause of death, especially when it has progressed too far or when it goes undetected and untreated. Colorectal cancer is the second most common cancer in US women of Hispanic, American Indian, Alaska Natives, or Asian/Pacific Islander ancestry, and the third most common cancer in white and African American.

American Women Bearing Unequal Burden of Colorectal Cancer

WASHINGTON and RED BANK, N.J. -- Despite having the greatest risk of developing and dying from colorectal cancer (CRC) of any gender, race or ethnicity, an astounding 96 percent of African American women do not consider themselves to be at high risk for the disease, according to a new Harris poll.

This alarming misperception has resulted in deadly inaction, with 70 percent of African American women over the age of 45 not getting potentially life-saving screenings for CRC.

One year after the American College of Gastroenterology (ACG) issued updated guidelines for African Americans to begin earlier CRC screenings at age 45, African American women have not gotten the message. To read more Click here..
